Piedmont President James F. Mellichamp will present a recital concert 4 p.m., Sunday, February 17 in the Piedmont College Chapel on the Demorest campus.
An acclaimed organist whose playing career spans more than four decades, Mellichamp will perform selections by Francis Jackson, Harold Darke, Percy Whitlock, Georg Böhm, J. S. Bach, Alexandre Guilmant, and Louis Vierne.
Admission is free but audience members will be given an opportunity to show support for President Mellichamp’s participation in Dancing with the Stars for Hope, a fundraiser that will support domestic violence victims.
Mellichamp will perform on the Sewell Organ, an instrument of his own design. The 3,691-pipe organ is named in honor of Charles K. Sewell ’54, a former trustee, and was constructed by Casavant Freres of Quebec, Canada, one of the world’s premier builders of pipe organs.
Mellichamp is Piedmont’s 13th president. His career at the college began in 1982 as a member of the music faculty. He has held positions as Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Provost before being named President in 2012.
Mellichamp has made prominent appearances as an organist throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. His concerts include solo recitals at such notable venues as the Washington Cathedral, Berlin Cathedral, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, and Westminster Abbey. Dr. Mellichamp will be a featured performer in May at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina.
