The tradition of academic excellence continues at Piedmont College as the 2015-16 USA South Academic All-Conference Team was announced with 150 student-athletes donning Green and Gold earning the honors.
Piedmont’s 150 ranked third in the league behind first place Huntingdon College and second place LaGrange with a record total of 1,467 student-athletes earning Academic All-Conference honors.
Nine institutions placed 100 or more athletes on the listing with Huntingdon (176), LaGrange (154) and Piedmont in the top three followed by Methodist (139), Maryville (133), Greensboro (128), Ferrum (116), N.C. Wesleyan (114) and Covenant (108) hitting the century mark as well.
In addition to Piedmont’s success in the USA South while working in the classroom, 2015-16 was also a banner year on the field and court for the Lions and Lady Lions as three teams claimed conference titles. For the fall, the Lady Lion soccer team claimed the USA South Tournament title & advanced the the NCAA tournament while just days later the men’s cross country team brought home the first men’s championship in the USA South in any sport for Piedmont since joining the league in 2012. In the spring, the Lady Lion softball team claimed the USA South regular season championship and made an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
During the 2014-15 academic year in its third year of membership, Piedmont College was ranked second amongst the league’s 13 member institutions. Piedmont has placed in the top three each year they have been a member of the USA South.
To be eligible for an Academic All-Conference award from the USA South, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 GPA in each of the two semesters of a given year. Any student-athlete participating in any varsity sport at any conference institution is eligible while the sport does not have to be a conference-sponsored sport.
