Pet of the Week: Tucker

Tucker is good with other dogs and he loves children. (Habersham County Animal Care and Control)

Hi, I’m Tucker. The people here at the shelter call me a “Rockstar,” but I think I’m just a 60-pound mixed-breed pooch looking for a new home! My journey has brought me to the Habersham County Animal Shelter, where I’m patiently waiting for that special someone to come pick me up.

My story is an interesting one. I just appeared on the porch of a nice couple in Cornelia one day. In an attempt to find my home, some posts were made with my photo to try and locate my family. Someone responded to most of them, claiming that I had been “dumped” by my owner (who lived in White County) in Habersham. There were even promises of proof and reports to the authorities. But as the tale unraveled, it seemed the details were changing.

I love to run and play! (Habersham County Animal Care and Control)

Animal control got involved, and suddenly the story shifted. The person who initially posted that they knew me backtracked, saying their significant other didn’t actually abandon me. Instead, they claimed they gave me away at a Walmart but didn’t remember which Walmart, when, or to who. In fact, they refused to give the contact information of my previous owner.

The search for the truth continued, but the person who started it all left me hanging in limbo at the shelter for days, refusing to share more information. Then, out of nowhere, they blamed mysterious “Nigerians” for hacking their Facebook and concocting the entire narrative. They even suggested these hackers held their personal Facebook page “hostage” for a mere $10.

They claimed they didn’t know me.

They claimed they had never seen me in their life.

They claimed their dog was home with them, even though I had immediately answered to the name “Tucker” that they provided previously and even though I was identical to the puppy pictures they sent me earlier.

I guess they were no longer fighting with each other, so they no longer had any need to retaliate against one another. I was collateral damage.

I thought I had been a good boy.
I play nice with the other dogs.
I love children.
I’m clean in my kennel.
I walk nice on the leash.
I don’t bark too much.

While I reflected in my concrete kennel, I spent weeks trying to figure out what I had done wrong to be disowned like this. To be abandoned. To be forgotten.

But the people here at the shelter told me I was not the one who was bad. It was the people that had me before. My new shelter friends promise me I will find a better home. One that appreciates that I am the best boy. One that will not throw me out. One that will be honest.

Now, here I am, patiently waiting at the shelter, hoping that someone like you will recognize the love and loyalty I have to offer. If you’re ready for a companion who’s been through a whirlwind of events, I’m here, ready to embark on a new adventure by your side. I promise to be more loyal to you than my last family was to me.

Love,
Tucker
