Baldwin man charged with burglary in break-in that caused power outage

A Baldwin man is charged with 2nd degree burglary and could face other charges in connection with a break-in at a Georgia Power substation in Cornelia.

24-year-old Cody Allen Moore was arrested by Cornelia Police Tuesday morning after a Georgia Power employee found him inside the building on Industrial Boulevard. The employee was there to check on a power outage. Georgia Power officials say Moore caused the outage.

Approximately 1,400 customers on the south end of Habersham County were affected. The power was out for just over an hour. It was restored by 6:36 a.m., according to Georgia Power spokesperson John Kraft.

“On investigating this morning’s outage involving an electric substation in the Cornelia area, we determined that an unauthorized person had broken into our secure facility and caused the outage,” Kraft told Now Habersham Tuesday. “With the help of the Baldwin and Cornelia Police Departments, the suspect was quickly apprehended.”

Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith says officers arrested Moore at the scene and charged him with 2nd degree burglary. He says the case is still under investigation. Georgia Power is cooperating in that investigation. More charges may be filed.

It is illegal to enter power substations and, Kraft emphasizes, extremely dangerous. “We appreciate the quick response of both local agencies and are glad that no injuries resulted from this intrusion,” he says.
