Pedestrian struck, killed crossing Athens area highway

A woman died over the weekend in Athens after being struck by a vehicle on the Atlanta Highway.

According to the initial investigation, the woman was attempting to cross the highway at Custom Place near Old Monroe Road when she was hit. Police say the woman, who was 36 years old and homeless, was not in a designated crosswalk or at an intersection at the time of the collision.

Officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to the scene on Friday, July 14, at approximately 9:37 p.m.

The responding officers attempted life-saving efforts at the scene. The woman was pronounced dead after arriving at a local hospital.

The police department says the investigation remains ongoing. Police are withholding the woman’s name pending the investigation.
