GSP identifies pedestrian struck and injured at Banks Crossing

Days after a pedestrian was struck and injured while crossing the highway at Banks Crossing in Commerce, the Georgia State Patrol has identified him.

A report released this weekend says 25-year-old Matthew Farquharson of Albany, New York, was injured in the accident on Thursday, May 11.

According to the state patrol report, Farquharson failed to yield to oncoming traffic as he started walking west across GA 15/US 441 near Hampton Court. A northbound Outlander Sport driven by 64-year-old Debra Leigh Alewine of Carnesville struck Farquharson, launching him north into the highway.

The wreck left Farquharson with multi-trauma injuries, says Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols. Banks County EMS rushed Farquharson to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville in serious condition.

Troopers say Farquharson was dressed in all black and was not inside a crosswalk when the SUV struck him. They add, there is a crosswalk on that stretch of highway about 500 feet south of where the late-night collision occurred.

An employee at the nearby Waffle House witnessed the crash. Troopers charged Farquharson with crossing the road outside of a crosswalk and issued Alewine a warning.
