Peace in the waiting

I received this devotion from Loretta Dalton yesterday. There is such wisdom in her words. Loretta is a mother who has suffered tremendously from the loss of her son; I swallow hard and take it all in. Through our trials and struggles, God is able to help others. May you receive from her message peace in the waiting. ~ Nora Almazan, Faith Editor

James 5:15-16

15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

The family sat in the waiting room, as their precious loved one clung to life. Having been given very somber news less than twenty-four hours earlier, hopes were lifted as the Sunday morning sun rose higher in the sky. Just yesterday, the family was told they needed a miracle, but today’s news from the doctor was more encouraging; levels were lower and vitals were better.

Visitors came and went throughout the day, each expressing concern and showering love upon the family. Some brought gifts and offers of help; all brought news of believers praying. One by one, the visitors, without fail, shared messages of love and concern from their fellow church members and spoke of special prayers of healing that were offered during morning services. Church after church was named.  Believers for miles and miles were united in faith and praying for a miracle.

Nothing could have brought this family of faith more comfort. They know the power of prayer, and they know God has a perfect plan. Many years ago, this precious family put their trust in God for all things, especially a time such as this.

For now, the family waits. They have made their petitions known to God and are trusting in His will. Along with other believers, they have sought help from the ultimate Healer and have found rest in His wisdom and faithfulness. They have found peace in their waiting.

Much can be learned from this family’s approach to adversity. The apostle Paul teaches us in the book of Philippians that peace, in all situations, is possible through God.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

May we all find peace in the waiting.
