A number of agencies aided the Athens Clarke-County Police Department last Friday at two license checkpoints and made contact with more than 400 drivers – five of whom were arrested.
The multi-jurisdictional vehicle checkpoints were positioned at two separate areas in Clarke-County after an ACCPD-hosted Oct. 18 meeting with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Notice of the checkpoints was advertised on social media beforehand.
Of the 471 motorists checked by police, three were arrested for no valid driver’s license and two were arrested for DUI.
At a checkpoint on Dr. MLK Jr. Parkway at Second Street, 15 people were issued citations ranging from license to equipment and seatbelt violations.
During the second checkpoint at the GA. Inner Loop 10 exit ramp at College Station Road, 171 vehicles were checked and 15 people were cited for violations ranging from DUI investigations to seatbelt and equipment infractions.
The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office, Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Health assisted in the checkpoints.
