U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-GA, made a statement after the resignation of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. Ossoff has been an outspoken critic of DeJoy for months over what’s been described as persistent issues and delays in mail delivery.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Ossoff issued the statement following the announcement that DeJoy will step down from his position.
Amid the announcement, Ossoff again expressed disappointment in the agency’s performance over the past year, citing persistent delays and failures that have affected families, businesses, seniors, and veterans in Georgia.
“USPS leadership has failed Georgia for over a year, leading to abysmal on-time performance and hardship for families, businesses, seniors, and veterans,” Ossoff said. “That’s why I’ve led aggressive oversight to demand better performance and prevent disastrous delays across our state.”
As the USPS Board of Governors begins its search for a new postmaster general, Ossoff called on them to search for leadership capable of restoring reliable service for Georgia’s residents.
“…I urge them to find new leadership that will swiftly restore normal service that Georgia families and businesses can rely on, and I will continue holding them accountable,” Ossoff said.
Background
Ossoff has long pushed for improvements in USPS services, particularly in Georgia, where delays have caused significant issues for residents. Last month, he launched an inquiry into the timely delivery of medications, prescriptions, and VA appointment notices for Georgia veterans. Many residents reported late prescriptions and missed appointment notifications, prompting Ossoff to take action.
In 2023, Ossoff pressed DeJoy directly under oath during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing regarding the delays affecting Georgians. He has also introduced the Postmaster General Reform Act of 2024, legislation designed to make the position of Postmaster General subject to a Presidential appointment with Senate confirmation, bringing more oversight to the role.
Ossoff has pledged to continue his efforts to ensure Georgia’s postal services improve under future leadership.
