State troopers charged a 19-year-old from Gainesville with DUI and other traffic violations following an early-morning wreck in Alto.
Eduardo Vazquez was driving a Chevrolet Silverado south on Caputi Drive when he ran off the road in a curve. The pickup truck then struck a fallen tree.
“The truck jumped the downed tree and came to rest on its passenger side,” according to the Georgia State Patrol report.
A 911 caller reported the wreck and said the occupant, later identified as Vazquez, was unconscious. Habersham County E-911 dispatched emergency personnel to the scene at 3:43 a.m. on Monday, June 12.
Units arrived to find the pickup on its side on the side of the road. Habersham County firefighters extricated Vazquez through the windshield within thirty minutes of responding. Habersham EMS transported him by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers with Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the wreck. They say Vazquez was not wearing his seat belt. In addition to DUI, troopers charged him with failure to maintain lane and failure to exercise due regard. They also charged him with a seat belt violation, driving too fast for conditions, and violation of license restrictions.
