One person was transported to the hospital Friday, Oct. 18, after a fire at a Fieldale feed mill in Baldwin.
Banks County Fire and EMS responded to a call of a fire on the fourth floor of the mill just after 5:25 p.m. One of the two people evacuated from the building was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for smoke inhalation, according to Banks County Fire Battalion Chief Scottie Mathis.
“Once we got crews up there, we found out it was a motor that had caught on fire,” Mathis said. “We kept it contained to that motor. It filled the third and fourth floor up with smoke.”
Once the fire was extinguished, crews removed the motor from the mill, which resumed operation just after 8 p.m. The cause of the fire is listed as accidental from a bearing in machinery failing during production, according to authorities.
There was minimal damage to the interior of the multi-story structure during the blaze.
Fire departments from the city of Baldwin, Habersham, and Jackson counties also responded to the call Friday evening.
