The Georgia State Patrol says a 27-year old Clarkesville woman died early Wednesday morning when her car ran off the road near Cody Road along Highway 365 in Mt. Airy. Sgt 1st Class Chad Johnson says the woman’s body was discovered after someone spotted the wreckage in the woods and called 911, some 12-14 hours after the accident happened.

According to Trooper Jason Stephens the woman was driving a red 2000 Honda Passport north on GA 365 just south of Cody Road when “the Honda traveled off of the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail and continued to travel off of the east side of the roadway down an embankment.” The vehicle overturned and struck several large trees.

Stephens says it appears the crash occurred between midnight and 4:30 a.m. The call came into 911 around 2 p.m. Investigators pieced together the timeline based on statements from drivers who saw the damaged guardrail in the pre-dawn hours of June 17th. The wreck went unnoticed because it could not be seen from the road. Johnson says the delay in locating the wreck likely had no impact on the outcome. “Due to the severity of her injuries it appears the driver died on impact,” he says.

The victim’s name is being witheld at the request of her immediate family until other family members can be notified.
