After a successful One Book Habersham – Together We Read in 2015, plans are being made for another opportunity for Habersham citizens, young and old, to come together through reading in 2016.
This year’s book and its author will be announced at a kick-off on January 27 from noon – 1:00 pm at the Level Grove Elementary Media Center. (The original kick-off date was January 20 but was postponed due to the weather.)
“All around the country for the last decade people have been coming together to build community through stories,” said Helen O’Brien, media specialist at Level Grove and chair of the One Book Habersham committee. “Last year Habersham County joined this national movement with the book Martina the Beautiful Cockroach by Carmen Agra Deedy.
“Hundreds of books (in English and Spanish) were distributed throughout the community for people to share in places like restaurants, doctor’s offices, health department, libraries and schools. As a result at least 4,000 people read the book, which is approximately 10% of Habersham County residents.”
This year the One Book Habersham planners hope to reach even more people by inviting local celebrities to read the book at specials events throughout the county.
The campaign will culminate on April 7th and 8th when this year’s author will be in Habersham County.
Students in every elementary school in the Habersham County School System will have an opportunity to hear the author read this year’s book and tell stories or speak to the importance of reading. An evening event with the author will be held on April 7 for the general public to attend.
Sponsor organizations for One Book Habersham are the Habersham County School System, Volunteers For Literacy, Piedmont College and Habersham County Libraries.
