One Book Habersham to Host Community Event

Lester Laminack is this year’s featured author and guest speaker.

One Book Habersham 2016 will hold the final One Book community events on Thursday April 7th at Habersham Central High School (HCHS). That night the public is invited to attend a book discussion with the popular children’s author Lester Laminack at 6pm in the school cafeteria and then for an author presentation at 7pm in the fine arts auditorium.

As part of the Second Annual One Book Habersham – Together We Read 2016,  Laminack’s beautifully written book, Three Hens and a Peacock has been circulating the community since mid-January. By the end of this year’s event on April 8 when Laminack will present to students from each of the Habersham County elementary schools, the One Book committee has estimated that close to 6500 people will have read the book.

“All around the country for the last decade people have been coming together to build community through stories,” said Helen O’Brien, media specialist at Level Grove and chair of the One Book Habersham committee. “Last year Habersham County joined this national movement with the book Martina the Beautiful Cockroach by Carmen Agra Deedy. This year we have been just as excited to have Lester Laminack and his wonderful book to share with the community.”

Beautifully illustrated by artist Henry Cole, Three Hens and a Peacock is a colorful, crazy book that reminds people to accept their own gifts. Books are available to read in local libraries, doctor’s offices and at several restaurants including The Attic, Harvest Habersham, The Copper Pot and Uptown Grill (Clarkesville and Cornelia) for patrons to read, share and discuss while waiting for their meal.

Last year’s featured author, Carmen Agra Deedy, kicked off this year’s One Book Habersham campaign at Level Grove Elementary School on January 27, 2016.
