The 3rd Annual One Book Habersham community-wide reading campaign is winding down. For the past three months, people of all ages have joined in reading this year’s featured book, “One Cool Friend,” by Toni Buzzeo.
The New York Times bestselling author will visit Habersham County next week. In addition to speaking with students in local schools, she’ll hold a Meet & Greet with the public at Piedmont College Commons on April 6 at 7 p.m.
One Book Habersham is part of a broader, national movement aimed at building community through stories. It was introduced to Habersham in 2015 by Level Grove Media Specialist and Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County board member Helen O’Brien. Her enthusiasm encouraged the VFL board to sponsor the event and soon, others joined.
Today, One Book Habersham is a community partnership between Volunteers for Literacy, the Habersham County School System, Habersham County’s public libraries and the Piedmont College School of Education.
Local civic groups and businesses, including Now Habersham, provide financial and in-kind support for the program to encourage people throughout the community to read.
This year’s book is about an unlikely friendship that forms during a boy’s visit to the aquarium.
Previous featured works include Lester Laminack’s “Three Hens and a Peacock,” and Carmen Agra Deedy’s “Martina the Beautiful Cockroach.”
Copies of this year’s book are available at all public schools and libraries. You may also find copies in business and medical offices and some local restaurants.
Pick up a copy today. Read it. Sign it. Then join your friends and neighbors at the Meet & Greet with Toni Buzzeo April 6 at 7 p.m. at the Commons at Piedmont College in Demorest. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available to buy and have Buzzeo sign.
