Old Ingles store demolition nears completion

A pile of debris is all that now stands where the old Ingles grocery store in Clarkesville once stood.

D. H. Griffin Wrecking Company of Atlanta tore down the condemned building this week. An excavator punched the first hole in the wall Monday afternoon, March 25. Now they are working to sort through the recyclables.

According to Project Manager Cedric Paul, they are separating the metal and steel and sending it to a recycling facility in Gainesville. This has slowed down the process of clearing the lot fully.

“It all depends on the turnaround on all the trucks,” he said Monday.

Paul said the block and brick would also be recycled.

The crew had ten days from the start of demolition to clean up the site. Paul said, “I always try to beat my deadlines.”

As of Friday afternoon, March 29, 2024, all that remains of the old Ingles building in Clarkesville are piles of debris and some of the exterior walls. (Jerry Neace/NowHabersham.com)
