Officials crack down on unpaid mobile home taxes

Check to make sure your mobile home has a 2023 tax decal

If you own a mobile home, make sure you have a current tax decal on it.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is now issuing summons to magistrate court for those with unpaid mobile home taxes.

All mobile homes in Habersham County are required to have a current decal visibly posted by April 1 of each year.

Mobile/modular homes are considered personal property and are taxable in the State of Georgia.

“We are now having to enforce mobile home decals,” says Sheriff Joey Terrell. “This is not a part of the job we enjoy, but these taxes were due April 1, so we are actively issuing summons. It’s not fair for a handful of people not to pay their taxes when the rest of us have to pay ours.”

The owner of any mobile/modular home located in Habersham County must file a return and obtain a location permit. In order to obtain that permit, the mobile home tax for the current year must be paid in full.

Mobile home tax bills are mailed in January of each year and are due on or before the April 1 deadline.

Mobile homeowners who do not have a valid 2023 Habersham County tax decal will receive a citation.

“We don’t want to have to come find them to write a ticket, so the best thing for them to do is get this taken care of immediately,” says Terrell.

The Habersham County Tax Commissioners Office, located at 130 Jacob’s Way, Clarkesville, is open from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A reminder that the tax office and all county offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 9, in observance of Columbus Day.
