What a sweet way to start the work week!

On Monday morning, nursing students from Piedmont College in Demorest delivered dozens of brownies to the staff at Habersham Medical Center. Members of the college’s R.H. Daniel School of Nursing Class of 2021 had one specific goal in mind: “We wanted to donate something that would make them smile,” says senior nursing student and class representative Megan Burchfield.

When COVID-19 hit Habersham, the college moved classes online. The nursing school canceled clinical training days. Nursing students searched for ways to support the local medical professionals who teach them. Employing lessons they learned in their Community Health class, the group also wanted to support local businesses.

“Piedmont’s program teaches us more than just technical skills, they teach us compassion for others, especially our community,” Burchfield says. She credits the class’ ‘sweet’ idea to them craving sugar as they study for finals approaching next week.

Burchfield contacted Brownies by Faith in Cornelia to place an order. Shop owners Misty and Faith Baird surprised her and generously donated 100 brownies. “It was so fun and fulfilling knowing that businesses were looking for ways to serve too!” Burchfield says.

The brownies by Faith were delivered with love to the hospital’s Emergency Department, MedSurg, and Intensive Care Unit. Burchfield says, “we just wanted them to know they are supported and appreciated by their community.”
