I voted this morning – simple, easy – I’m wearing my “I’m a Georgia Voter” sticker even as I type these words to you. Voting is such a privilege. Many people in this world do not have the opportunity to vote or to voice an opinion or to even have a choice in what they say and do. God has richly blessed us, and I am grateful that I can vote.
I do have a prediction for November 9th, you know, the morning after the big day of decision.
God is not dependent on this election. He’s not watching the polls, gnawing on His fingernails, twisting His hair in anxiety. God has never depended on a president or a king or a Supreme Court Justice. Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He wishes.”
Personally, I’m ready for November 9th – the ugliness of this campaign is beyond anything I’ve ever seen – but, what have I seen, really, relative to the atrocities in other countries?
The other night after the debate I cried out to God – not for one candidate to win over another – but for the heartlessness of our nation.
And as I prayed, scripture came to mind. Lamentations 3:21-23, “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him. 25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him;”
November 9th, God will still be on the throne. The Electoral College does not dictate His reign. For those of us who love Him, trust Him, and believe in His sovereignty, whatever the turn-out of the day before, nothing can change what we know in our hearts. Since we know God influences the hearts of all rulers, it is our job to begin diligently praying for Him to change his or her heart. November 9th will bring peace. Good things will happen. There is nothing you and I, as believers, will face that He will not equip us to handle – even Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump! (I say that in jest, I actually respect them both for running for the presidency. I am sure it is horrible to be placed under the scrutiny of the media and the American people.)
My prayer for this nation is healing, unity, acceptance, tolerance, compassion, and above all, God. We need God like never before. Our nation is under God – the one true God – and we need to keep it that way.
