North Georgia Network is changing its name. The cooperative-owned telecommunications company will now simply be known as “NGN.” Company officials issued a press release Monday saying the name change reflects the growing level of interest in and demand for the network’s fiber optic services beyond North Georgia.
The North Georgia Network was established in 2009. It currently operates over 1,600 miles of fiber optic infrastructure from its headquarters in Clarkesville, Georgia.
“Although we’ll be using a new name, we’ll continue to offer the same exceptional services to our existing members that we always have, while connecting new regions through NGN’s model of partnering with member-owned utility cooperatives and other public entities. This unique model is a proven ‘best-fit’ for rural communities looking to close the digital divide,” says Paul Belk, President and CEO of NGN.
NGN is a corporation of cooperatives owned by its members which include Habersham Electric Membership Corporation (HEMC), Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation (BRMEMC) and NGN Connect, according to the company’s website.
The company’s slogan is “live rural” and “work global.”
Since the network’s launch, nearly 8,500 of Blue Ridge Mountain EMC and Habersham EMC’s electric customers have received high-speed internet service over the NGN network. That number continues to grow each week, according to the release, and NGN looks to pioneer growth in the rural broadband industry as it expands into new rural communities.
