As reported by WSB-TV, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will reportedly move forward with deportation proceedings against a North Georgia college student, even after local police admitted she was wrongfully pulled over.
Nineteen-year-old Ximena Arias-Cristobal, a student at Dalton State University, was initially cited last week for making an illegal right turn. But on Monday, the Dalton Police Department said officers had stopped the wrong vehicle and called the incident a “regrettable mistake,” Channel 2 reported.
Arias-Cristobal has lived in the United States since the age of four, after her parents brought her into the country illegally from Mexico. Despite the error made by local law enforcement, ICE stated that it intends to move forward with her removal from the U.S.
Supporters have rallied behind Arias-Cristobal, raising more than $80,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to cover her legal expenses.
