The Lady Warriors have zero seniors on their roster. And that’s just fine. The youth movement only means these girls will continue to improve under third-year head coach Jarvis Davenport.vThat’s bad news for anyone else in Region 7-AAAA.
The girls are 8-7 overall following a big region win at Denmark on the road this past weekend, which has White County 3-2 in region play.
“Our overall record is not as good as I thought it might be [at this point], but we are improving every game,” says Davenport. “But if this were a finished product right now, we’d be in trouble because we have a long time til the end of the year.”
The recent Denmark win on the road though showed Davenport that the girls are growing and able to focus and come up with a big win away from home. The young group includes a dynamic core that includes (but not limited to) Dasha Cannon, Naomi Crumley, and Bently Cronic.
Davenport raves about those three and others such as Ellie Gearing, who he says is an “unsung hero” and a “coach’s dream.”
“I don’t think they understand right now how good they can be,” says Davenport of this young group who has a lot of untapped potential.
The Lady Warriors have been propelled by last season’s playoff run.
“They got to see what it was like to be in a big-time pressure situation…but they felt like they should have gone further and left with a bad taste in their mouth.”
No doubt these girls, who well-remember the loss at the buzzer to end their tourney run last season, have learned from that and are fueled by that experience.
