NH readers react after Trump floats idea of delaying election

President Donald Trump on Thursday floated the idea of delaying November’s presidential election, lending further credence to critics’ concerns he might attempt to derail the contest between him and Joe Biden.

Trump has no authority to delay an election, but in his tweet offered the suggestion because he claimed without evidence the contest will be flawed.

“With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA,” he wrote. “Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”

The president was swiftly criticized and his idea strongly rejected by many, some who viewed it as an effort distract from the flailing economy. The President tweeted his comments minutes after the federal government reported the worst economic contraction in recorded history. Others dismissed Trump’s tweet as an attempt to “crank up” the “fake news” media.

Now Habersham asked our readers “Should the U.S. delay the November 3 General Election?” We posed the question, noting this: The president does not have the power to delay the election. The date is fixed, by law, and can only be changed by law. And while Congress agreeing to that would be highly unlikely, we still want to know what you think about the President floating this idea.

Initial responses, were overwhelmingly against pushing back the election with many simply responding “No.” Others expounded on their concerns.

“This feels like a bad relationship…. they accuse you of cheating but are actually cheating themselves,” wrote Lulu Kilgore. “The fact that he’s so dead set on controlling how we vote is alarming all by itself. Red flags people.”

Art Lemuel wrote, “Sweet fancy Moses. He does realize we can verify our mail-in ballot, right?”

And Ben Tanner took no a step farther writing, “The word NO written in the sky by red, white, and blue bi-planes.”

Now Habersham reader Allen McGovern wrote, “It’s a BS question and designed to play into the leftist propaganda campaign that somehow Trump would not relinquish the office. The constitution clearly states the date for presidential elections and the SCOTUS would never make an exception unless we were in the midst of nuclear war. The only reason he put that out there is because the fake news media has been making it a fanciful discussion on their chatter boards and he wants to get them cranked up!”
