Fall plant sale scheduled Oct. 16-19 at college’s new state-of-the-art greenhouses
North Georgia Technical College opened two new state-of-the-art, high efficiency greenhouses to horticulture students this semester. According to NGTC Horticulture Instructor Craig Thurmond, these new greenhouses premier as the nicest greenhouses in the state and provide a bigger space for students to grow more varieties of plants and vegetables.
“These greenhouses are bigger than our previous ones and offer more opportunities for students to work in a facility similar in technology and efficiency to real world horticulture work environments,” says Thurmond. “Our students have more room to grow not only plants, but more vegetables than we have in the past. We have more area outdoors to work.”
The two greenhouses were built in a new location on the back part of the Clarkesville Campus as the older greenhouses were taken down to make room for the new Industrial Technology Center, scheduled to open in 2018.
Thurmond says that this year’s Fall Plant Sale, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 16-19, will be located in the new greenhouses and encourages the public to take advantage of touring the greenhouses while shopping early for fall plants. The sale is open to the public, and purchases are cash or check only. Variety of plants include fall annuals, perennials, native shrubs, hydrangeas, Japanese Maples and fall vegetables.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Horticulture Program and help fund their annual trip to study the landscapes and horticulture “behind-the-scenes” at Disney World in Florida.
