NEGA communities respond to recent national events

Local communities are responding in a public way to the recent police shootings and protests across America. Prayer vigils and events aimed at fostering racial unity and support for law enforcement are being held throughout Northeast Georgia.

July 15th

Nationwide

A community campaign called #backingtheblue is making the rounds on social media. People all over the country are encouraged to wear blue on Friday, July 15 in a show of solidarity with law enforcement.

July 17th

Hall County

In Hall County this weekend, worshipers will come together in a display of love and unity. The Gainesville Times reports that after Sunday school on July 17, members of the traditionally white Air Line Baptist Church in North Hall plan to travel to traditionally black St. John Baptist Church in Gainesville for joint worship.

July 28th

Banks County

On Thursday, July 28 at 6 p.m. the Freemasons Hudson Lodge #294 in Commerce will host a public safety appreciation event and prayer vigil in Nicholson, GA. Organizer Cameron Boswell says they’re working “to try to make it a large community event to show love and support with the current turmoil in our country.”  The event will honor in law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel. It will be held in the Nicholson Amphitheater located at 175 Lakeview Drive, Nicholson, GA.

Stephens County

The City of Toccoa is organizing a prayer vigil Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m. It will be held on Sage Street in downtown Toccoa. According to WNEG Radio, Stephens County Commission Chairman Dennis Bell called for the event saying, “We need to come together as one and love one another instead of spreading hate out here.”

These events are in addition to others that have already taken place in our region.

The Torch Worship Center in Demorest held a prayer vigil on July 8th, less that 24 hours after the five officers were killed. And in Cleveland, local religious, law enforcement and government leaders joined several dozen community members for a forum on community safety.
