AT&T says it has resolved a major outage that affected its customers nationwide.
The network went down early Thursday, leaving customers unable to place calls, text or access the internet. Verizon and T-Mobile customers also reported network outages, but those outages were not as widespread.
More than 73,000 AT&T customers reported outages on the digital service tracking site DownDetector.
In a statement issued Thursday evening, AT&T said the outage was caused by a software update: “Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack. We are continuing our assessment of today’s outage to ensure we keep delivering the service that our customers deserve.”
The Federal Communications Commission, meanwhile, issued a statement saying it was aware of the outages and “our Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is actively investigating.”
We are aware of the reported wireless outages, and our Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is actively investigating. We are in touch with AT&T and public safety authorities, including FirstNet, as well as other providers.
