If you tried logging onto your favorite website or app early Tuesday morning, you may have been greeted with a 503 error message. That’s because the content delivery network that supports those sites experienced a widespread failure.
Fastly is a cloud service that runs a network of servers meant to improve websites’ reliability and speed. It went down for about an hour, making many major sites temporarily unavailable.
The company provides content delivery for Twitch, Pinterest, HBO Max, Hulu, Reddit, Spotify, and other services. It also supports news sites and apps like CNN, The Guardian, the New York Times and many others.
Other major internet platforms and sites, including Amazon, Target, and the UK government website — gov.uk — were affected.
Fastly said on its service status website Tuesday morning, it had identified the problem and fixed the issue.
We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration. Our global network is coming back online. Continued status is available at https://t.co/RIQWX0LWwl

Affected sites and apps began returning online around 7 a.m. ET, although Fastly said some customers may experience longer load times as a residual effect of the outage.
