Multi-vehicle crash shuts down I-85 in Franklin County

No Serious Injuries Reported in Labor Day Weekend Incident

A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 in Northeast Georgia stalled early Labor Day holiday traffic and sent two people to the hospital, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The crash happened around 1:05 p.m. on August 29 on the southbound side of I-85 near mile marker 157 in Franklin County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 20-year-old Riley Caroline Bentley of Martin was driving a Volkswagen Tiguan behind a Chevrolet Silverado 2500, pulling a utility trailer. As the Silverado slowed due to traffic, the Volkswagen struck the rear of the trailer. A GMC Sierra driven by 38-year-old Ryan Allen Gardner of Monticello rear-ended the Volkswagen, causing it to strike the trailer a second time. The impact pushed the Silverado into a flatbed trailer pulled by a Dodge Ram 2500.

The four-vehicle pileup shut down the southbound lanes of the interstate for about an hour as tow trucks cleared the wreckage.

Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell investigated the wreck. They say no impairment was suspected.

Franklin County EMS transported Bentley and Gardner to separate hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers charged them with following too close.
