Law enforcement conducted two road safety checks in Habersham County Thursday night. A total of ten people were arrested.
Two road safety checks in Habersham County Thursday night resulted in ten arrests and multiple occupant safety citations.
The first checkpoint was set up on Historic Highway 441 near Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest. It lasted an hour and wrapped up shortly after 8:30 p.m.
“For this time of day and the amount of traffic in one hour, this is a very successful safety check,” says Habersham Sheriff’s Captain Floyd Canup. “We wrote several occupant safety citations, arrested two drug suspects, one DUI suspect, and one person on an outstanding arrest warrant. Typically, an hour doesn’t yield that good of a result on a safety check, so, it was really successful.”
After leaving Demorest, officers set up another checkpoint at the intersection of Duncan Bridge and Mud Creek Roads in Cornelia. They made three more drug arrests and arrested three more suspected DUIs. They also issued tickets for safety violations.
Demorest Police Chief Robin Krockum says these types of operations are important to protect public safety. “We are trying to reduce the amount of traffic related injuries and fatalities in our area.”
The multi-agency operation was overseen by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office as part of the county’s road safety program funded through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. It involved officers from seven local and state law enforcement agencies including the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Demorest Police, Georgia State Patrol, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Police, Jefferson Police and the Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 Unit.
