The transformation of the intersection at Mt. Zion Road and GA 365 in Alto is now complete. Crews finished work on the RCUT (Restricted Crossing U-Turn Intersection).
The shadow of five crosses marks this deadly intersection which has claimed the lives of seven people, including three children, since 2021. The state transportation department and local officials have been under pressure to approve the changes after an accident in July killed five people at the crossover.
The intersection is now designed to prevent vehicles from crossing over the highway. Instead, side street traffic on Mt. Zion will have to turn right and make a U-turn at Crane Mill Road or Alto-Mud Creek Road.
The Georgia Department of Transportation contracted with Vertical Earth LLC to install the RCUT.
