A Mt. Airy woman was hospitalized after she was ejected from a pickup truck during a chase with a Habersham County Sheriff’s deputy.
It happened around 10:30 Thursday night near Pea Ridge Road.
Habersham County deputies received a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) from county dispatch for a green Toyota Tacoma that was “driving all over the roadway” on Hwy. 105 approaching Hwy. 115.
A Habersham County Deputy met a vehicle matching the description in the area of Cannon Bridge Road. The suspect vehicle was partially in the deputy’s lane, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Wurtz.
“The deputy turned his vehicle around behind the green Toyota Tacoma and observed the vehicle almost strike the side of the bridge. The deputy activated his emergency lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of Old Cannon Bridge Road,” says Wurtz.
The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Amy Gibbs of Mt Airy, refused to stop. A chase ensued. During the pursuit, Wurtz says Gibbs’ SUV traveled into oncoming traffic several times. The deputy conducted a PIT maneuver near Pea Ridge Road in an attempt to keep the vehicle from entering the more congested areas of Highway 105 and Highway 385.
When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle the Tacoma turned sideways and began to roll. Gibbs was ejected from the vehicle. Habersham EMS transported her to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. She’s listed in satisfactory condition, according to hospital spokesperson Michelle Oleson.
The Georgia State Patrol investigated the accident and, according to Wurtz, charged Gibbs with DUI. The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office charged her with fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane.
