A 23-year-old man from Habersham County, Cameron Joseph Myers, was arrested on Dec. 28, after allegedly fleeing from a deputy in the Cornelia Walmart area.
Myers, initially wanted for a probation violation, was charged with obstruction of an officer following his flight. He was later taken to the Habersham County Detention Center in Clarkesville, where staff used a body scanner to check for contraband but found nothing.
The following day, at 8:25 p.m., Dec. 29, another inmate at the facility suffered an apparent drug overdose. The staff responded quickly, administering Narcan and performing CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived. The inmate was transported to the hospital, treated, and returned to custody.
Further investigation revealed that Myers had brought fentanyl into the detention center. During an interview, Myers allegedly admitted to smoking fentanyl and smuggling the drug into the facility.
As a result, he was hit with additional charges, including crossing guard lines with a controlled substance, drug distribution, and possession of drugs by an inmate. Sheriff’s office officials emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of all inmates and maintaining transparency regarding incidents like these, which reflect the broader challenges posed by the illegal drug epidemic.
Myers has been denied bond, and the investigation continues. The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, along with regional drug enforcement teams, is working diligently on this case.
