Georgia Theatre Company (GTC) which owns Habersham County’s lone movie theater is temporarily closing up shop due to the coronavirus threat.

The theater company will close all of its locations, including Habersham Hills Cinemas, at the close of business today, March 17.

Company president Bo Chambliss says GTC plans “to follow the President’s request to close for the next 15 days.” He says they hope to reopen on April 3.

GTC owns 22 movie theaters across Georgia including in Mt. Airy, Athens, Commerce, Marietta, and in Central and South Georgia. The company also owns theaters in South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia.

Three of the nation’s largest movie theater chains, AMC, Regal, and Cinemark also announced Tuesday they’re closing their theaters in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The largest chain, AMC, is shutting down all of its theaters nationwide for six to 12 weeks.
