The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has released the name of the man suspected in the murders of a Hall County mother and daughter. Thang Duc Doan, 51, was shot and killed by Hall County deputies who responded to the scene in Buford late Tuesday night.

After shooting the suspect, deputies discovered the bodies of Kim Nguyen, 42, and her daughter Lam-Ahn Tran, 18, inside their Long Creek Drive home. Their cause of death has not been confirmed, according to state investigators. Officials sent their bodies to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy.

“Our investigators will release the specific cause of death when appropriate,” the GBI says.
“We ask for your patience as our investigators work. We also ask for your consideration for the family and neighbors of the victims as they process this tragedy.”

Welfare check leads to double murder investigation

Preliminary information indicates that the Hall County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check on the afternoon of August 2 at the residence in the 3200 block of Long Creek Drive. When they were unable to contact anyone at the home, a concerned relative went to the house attempting to locate his family members. Doan, of Buford, was at the house and told the relative the family members were not there. Doan had what appeared to be blood on his clothing. The relative gave this information to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, which then secured a search warrant for the residence.

“At approximately 11 p.m., Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies made entry into the home. Once inside, they encountered Doan wielding a knife. Doan was shot by law enforcement and died,” says GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles.

No deputies were injured in the incident, according to Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson B.J. Williams. While searching the house after the shooting, deputies found Nguyen and her daughter dead.

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy on Doan as part of the Bureau’s independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Once that investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.

This is the 74th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2022.
