Morning wreck on US-441 sends Demorest teen to the hospital

A 16-year-old Demorest girl wound up in the hospital this morning following a two-car wreck in Cornelia. The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on US-441 at the GA 365 northbound exit/entrance ramp.

Habersham EMS transported Jaden Glatfelter to Habersham Medical Center for treatment after she complained of neck and back injuries.

According to the accident report, Glatfelter was driving a white 2017 Nissan Sentra south on US-441/GA 105. 19-year-old Kane Phammasouk, also of Demorest, was traveling north in a 2003 Toyota Corolla. He told police the light at the intersection was a solid yellow as he attempted a left-hand turn onto the highway entrance ramp. At the same time, Glatefelter said she observed the yellow light but was too close to the intersection to apply her brakes in a safe manner.

As Phammasouk turned, the two cars collided. The impact caused his car to spin around. It ended up facing south in the far right southbound lane of US-441/GA 105. Glatfelter’s car crashed into a crosswalk sign.

Cornelia Fire Department personnel were first on the scene. They stabilized Glatfelter’s neck and stayed with her in the car until the ambulance arrived. Habersham EMS transported her to Habersham Medical Center for treatment. Police say Phammasouk did not complain of any injuries and refused medical attention at the scene.

The accident tied up morning traffic which was already slowed by a heavy early morning fog. Three lanes were blocked for about forty minutes as emergency personnel worked to remove Glatfelter from the car and crews cleared the wreckage.

Police reopened all lanes of traffic at 8:10 a.m. No citations were issued at the time of the incident.
