MLK Peace Walk and Celebration Sunday in Cornelia

A peace walk and celebration are planned Sunday in Cornelia in observance of Martin Luther King Day. The annual event, now in its 32nd year, begins at 2 p.m. at the Big Red Apple monument in Cornelia. Participants will walk from downtown Cornelia to Shady Grove Baptist Church for a “Sing, Sup, & Share” celebration.

The less than half-mile walk is expected to take approximately 10-20 minutes. It will be followed by a potluck dinner at the church featuring speakers and singing.

In year’s past, the event has drawn people from all over Northeast Georgia and it’s expected to do so again.

Organizers say the purpose of the event is to replenish, nourish and encourage people in their efforts to increase peace and justice in the world. NE Georgia PeaceWORKS is one of the organizing groups. A post to its official Facebook page states that Sunday’s event is a time “To walk hand in hand. To join our voices in song. To be reminded of the vision of Martin Luther King Jr. To share a meal and greet one another with love.”

Participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share. Food may be dropped off at the church starting at 1:30 p.m. prior to the walk. Shady Grove Baptist Church is located at 226 MLK Jr. Drive, Cornelia, GA 30531.

The Big Red Apple is located beside the Historic Train Depot and Museum at 141 Clarkesville Street NW, Cornelia, GA 30531.
