Chattanooga, TN – On a chilly night in Chattanooga, the Lions of Piedmont College took defending USA South champions Covenant College to the brink before being forced to settle for a 1-1 tie with the Scots.
Piedmont had taken a lead in the 20th minute on CULLEN COPLAND’s quality finish after CHASE KANE headed the ball on. The Lions looked in control throughout the half, but faced a ferocious side in the second half with Covenant outshooting PC 10-5 in the final 45 minutes after Piedmont held a 6-3 shot advantage at the half.
Though the Scots could not equalize in the run of play, Covenant was able to convert a penalty kick awarded in the 81st minute to tie the contest 1-1 sending it to extra time to decide a winner. The teams combined for an exciting extra 20 minutes for those fans who stuck around as the rain started to come down and each had chances to end it.
The highlight for PC in the extra period came when senior keeper KENNETH HEARN made a brilliant one-handed save going to his left just keeping the Covenant shot off the frame to hold the draw 1-1 for Piedmont.
