Mega load transport expected to disrupt traffic

Mega Load travels through NEGA

A 285 ton turbine rotor will make its way across north Georgia over the next several days. The mega load should arrive in Georgia around 2 p.m. today. State transportation officials warn drivers to be on alert and expect delays.

The 266-foot long turbine rotor is being moved to the new General Electric storage facility in Rome. It’s traveling on a 31-axle transport and is accompanied by police escorts and moving message boards warning of traffic interruptions.

Route

GDOT initially said the mega load would stop at the Flying J Truck Stop near Carnesville once it entered Georgia but later changed that to the Weigh Station on I-85 South near the GA/SC border. The mega load will remain at the Weigh Station until 8 p.m. Thursday, June 11. The convoy will then resume travel to Rome along the following route:

South on I-85 to Exit #137, US 129/SR 11 in Jackson County to SR 10 Loop in Athens to SR 316 west in Oconee County to I-85 south in Gwinnett to I-285 west then to I-75 north exiting at Exit 306 in Adairsville. The Mega Load will then use SR 140 west to SR 53 south to SR 1 Loop to get to the GE plant in Rome.

Warnings

GDOT urges motorists to “exercise extreme caution” when near the mega load and follow instructions from the law enforcement escort.

The convoy is expected to arrive at the GE facility in Rome around 2 a.m. Friday, June 12.
