Mega Load makes it’s way through Northeast Georgia tonight

A 285 ton turbine rotor is winding it’s way across Northeast Georgia tonight.

The “mega-load” transport left the Weigh Station on I-85 South near the GA/SC border around 8pm Thursday evening heading for Rome by way of I-85 to Jackson County then US 129 to the State Route 10 loop around Athens.

Several law enforcement agencies coordinated by the Georgia Department of Transportation are clearing a path for the massive 266-foot long rotor and the 31-axel trailer on which it sits. They’re setting up rolling roadblocks as they move along State Route 316 through Oconee County back to I-85 south in Gwinnett County and then over to I-75 via I-285.

The rolling behemoth will then exit  in Adairsville moving on to State Route 140 then State Route 53 to the State Route 1 Loop in Rome. It’s final destination is the GE plant in Floyd County.

GDOT says you should “exercise extreme caution” if you’re near the mega load and follow all instructions from the law enforcement escort.

The convoy is expected to arrive at the GE facility in Rome around 2 a.m. Friday, June 12.
