Mary Scroggs

Mary Scroggs, age 94, of Alto, Georgia, saw Jesus on Saturday, July 29. 2023 at 1:31 p.m.

Mrs. Scroggs was born on July 3, 1929, in Lumpkin County, Georgia, to the late John B. and Nora Belle Nix. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, J. C. Scroggs, and three brothers, John B. Nix, Jr., Joseph H. Nix, and Charles H. Nix: two sisters: Sarah Ann Allen and Martha Elfreida Flowers.

Mrs. Scroggs has been a member of the Alto Baptist Church since the age of twelve and was the oldest living member. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, and WMU Director. Along with her husband, J. C. Scroggs, they served as Youth Choir Directors, as well as preparing the communion bread. Mrs. Scroggs was always willing to serve her Lord in any capacity. She was a retired teacher’s aide, having served at Baldwin Elementary School for nineteen years of loyal and dedicated service, and was one of the first teacher’s aides in the school.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Tommy Glenn Thompson, of Winder; a sister, Ruth Brown, of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Tommy Brian Thompson and Christy Thompson Nerroth; great-grandchildren, Michael C. (Mayra) Nerroth, III, and Joshua Bryan Nerroth; two great-great-grandchildren, Haley and Ensley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terry and Annette Roberts, of Athens; sister-in-law, Geneel Nix, of Atlanta; and number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm. Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the Whitfield Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia, with the Rev. Greg Pruitt, Rev. Raymond Payne, and Mrs. Joyce Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at Yonah Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 pm until 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
