Mary “Missy” McDaniel York

Mary “Missy” McDaniel York, age 59, of Lakemont, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on May 24, 2021, at Emory University Hospital, surrounded by her husband and daughters. Missy was the wife of Gary York. They shared almost 31 years together.

Missy was born on March 6, 1962, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Sam and Mildred McDaniel.

She was a member of Battle Branch Baptist Church. She enjoys taking cruises with her husband, going to the beach, North Georgia Wineries, hanging out by the pool, but more than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, friends, and family. She will be remembered for her strength, strong will, and her huge loving heart.

She graduated from St. Margaret’s Academy in Tappahannock, Virginia, in 1981. After high school, she attended Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. After Ferru, she became a travel agent for CI Travel. She graduation Piedmont College with a BS in Early Childhood Education. She then furthered her education at Walden University, where she received a Masters of Education in Reading and Early Literacy. She was a retired teacher of over 20 years from Rabun County Elementary School, where she taught 4th grade.

She is survived by her husband, Gary York; two daughters, Katie York (Daniel Wilson) and Colby Robinette (Thomas Robinette); two grandsons, Rylan and Rhett Robinette; brother, Cary McDaniel (Cindy); nephews, Sam McDaniel (Jordan) and Joe McDaniel (Tori). She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mildred McDaniel; father-in-law, J.P. York, and beloved aunt, Gail Morton.

The family will have a memorial service on Friday, June 4th, at 2:00 pm at Battle Branch Baptist Church.
