
On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Marjorie Wikle Coons passed away at the age of 98. Marjorie was born on January 22, 1927, in Habersham County, Georgia. She was married to then-Capt. Earl B. Coons on July 11, 1953 in Richmond Virginia and together they raised a daughter, Diane, and a son, Jeffery.
Marjorie was a prolific letter writer, keeping in constant touch with her parents and three brothers during the years supporting Earl’s military career at U.S. Army bases in Germany and then on the East Coast in New York, New Jersey, and finally in Atlanta. In retirement, she and Earl moved to Batesville, Georgia, in 1970, where she was able to take care of her mother Edith Wikle and spend time being a loving wife and mother to an expanding family over the decades to follow. She stayed in close touch with friends and relatives, always wanting to share the joys of life and offering support to them during hardships.
In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Earl in 1988, and brothers Jesse Ernest Wikle, Jr., William Charles Wikle, and Jack Ryals Wikle. She is survived by her daughter Diane Hall (Sam) of Clarkesville, her son Jeffery Coons (Terri) of Milton, her two grandsons Justin Schapansky and Joshua Coons (Melissa), and her three granddaughters Arianne Coons, Callie McNeal (Matt), and Veronica Coons, and great-grandchildren Keller Oliver, Dylan Schapansky, Caroline Schapansky, Elle McNeal, Samuel McNeal, Rosemary Coons and Wesley Coons.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, June 2, 2025 at Hillside Memorial Chapel with Dr. Don Drawdy, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service Monday from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. She will be laid to rest at the Providence Baptist Church cemetery alongside her husband.
