Man taken to hospital after being hit by vehicle in Alto

Authorities still have not identified the driver of a sedan that struck a pedestrian outside Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto.

Patrick McCollum was injured when the passenger side mirror of a silver Honda Civic struck him in the arm. The Alto man and vehicle were both traveling south on Gainesville Highway near Smokey Road when the incident happened around 3:17 p.m. on December 21.

Mccollum sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Medics say he was “alert and talking” when they arrived. Habersham County Emergency Services transported him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for evaluation.

Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa says no charges have been filed at this time. They are still working to identify the driver.

This is the second time in less than a month that a person has been hit by a vehicle near the prison.

52-year-old Robin Hood of Cleveland was injured when a car ran into her in the crosswalk on Gainesville Highway on Thanksgiving Day.
