A man rappeling off the rock face of Yonah Mountain in White County was injured after he fell approximately 100-feet down the side of the mountain.

Officials say the 55-year-old lost his footing while rappeling down Yonah Mountain on Sunday, September 15. He landed on the first plateau of the rock face.

White County EMS was the first to respond to the scene around 4 p.m. The White County Fire Department, Lee Arrendale Fire Brigade, CERT REHAB team, Department of Natural Resources, and City of Cleveland firefighters also were involved in the rescue.

In all, there were 21 responders on the scene. It took them about three-and-a-half hours to rescue the man, says White County Public Safety Director David Murphy.

Rescue teams hiked into the area and set up a rope system. Using a stokes basket they pulled the injured man to safety. He was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Murphy says none of his injuries were life-threatening.
