First responders from Habersham and White counties, along with several bystanders, rescued a man who nearly drowned in the Chattahoochee River over the weekend.
The man’s foot got wedged between rocks, causing him to get stuck in rapidly flowing water.
Rescuers were alerted to the scene just before 5 p.m. Sunday by a 911 caller at 109 River Run Trail. Bystanders stretched a rope across the rapids to help the man keep his head above water while waiting on emergency personnel to arrive. Once they did, rescuers entered the water, freed the man’s foot, and assisted him to shore, according to Habersham County Emergency Services (HCES) Director Chad Black.
Medics evaluated the man on the scene. He refused hospital transport, says Black.
Personnel from HCES, Habersham Search and Rescue (HabSAR) and the White County Fire Department responded to the call.
This is the third time local first responders have been called to a rescue on the Chattahoochee River since July 9. The two prior incidents involved searches for missing rafters and kayakers who were all found safe.
