The White County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a house fire near Helen that left a man injured.

The blaze broke out Thursday afternoon, March 11, at 4092 Helen Highway. Upon arrival, units found the 2,000-square-foot wooden structure approximately fifty-percent involved. The occupant, who officials described as being in his late fifties, was injured as he escaped the burning home.

“Fire units began a defensive attack until more personnel arrived to safely make an interior attack on the residence,” says White County Public Safety Director David Murphy. Some firefighters were already tied up working a woods fire off of Duncan Bridge Road. County Stations 3 and 2, with mutual aid from Cleveland and Helen, responded to the house fire.

White County EMS transported the injured man to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Firefighters remained on the scene for more than five hours.

Investigators are looking into what caused the blaze. According to Murphy, this was the third fire within a week at this location.
