Crews will close off a section of Main Street in downtown Cornelia starting next week to repair a sinkhole.
Cornelia City Manager Dee Anderson says on May 31, city staff noticed a hole in the asphalt across from the Food Factory Restaurant.
“Upon investigation, it was discovered that stormwater has been washing out the dirt under Main Street, causing the sinkhole,” says Anderson.
To make the necessary repairs, city crews will need to dig up Main Street between Hodges Street and Appletree Alley. Crews will begin work on the project on Monday, June 12.
While the work is being done, Main Street will be closed between Stovall Street and Clarksville/Irvin Street. Hodges Street will also be closed between Wells Street and Main Street.
Anderson says they hope to complete the work by next Friday, June 16, but adds, “We will not know until we begin excavating and determine how bad the problem is.”
Detours will be set up to reroute traffic around the closed section of the roadway. To avoid delays, drivers should consider alternate routes.
