The Lumpkin County Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter is gearing up for one of its most anticipated annual events—the Pig Raffle. On March 3 at 1 p.m., the community will have the chance to participate in this fun and impactful fundraiser, which not only offers the chance to win a 250-pound pig but also supports agricultural education and leadership development for local students.

A tradition of giving back to agriculture education

The Lumpkin County FFA Pig Raffle is more than just a chance to win a large cut of pork; it’s an essential fundraiser for the local FFA chapter. The funds raised through this raffle help to support various educational programs, leadership activities, and scholarships for FFA students. By purchasing a ticket, community members not only stand a chance to win, but they are also investing in the future of agricultural education and helping students build valuable life skills.

Mitzi Deaton, administrative assistant to Sheriff Stacy Jarrard, is actively involved in FFA. “So many students have a disconnect when it comes to livestock. They haven’t grown up on a farm. Many don’t understand the association between bacon and a pig,” Deaton said. Students learn to drive tractors and understand the importance of agriculture under the leadership of Greg Murray, an agriculture teacher at Lumpkin County Schools.

The FFA chapter at Lumpkin County High School has a long tradition of fostering leadership in students interested in agriculture. By participating in events like the pig raffle, supporters directly contribute to the success of local youth, encouraging them to pursue careers in agriculture, environmental science, and related fields.

Student involvement: from piglets to raffle

Under Murray’s guidance, students in the FFA program raise and care for the pig that will be raffled. The students begin by taking care of several piglets in late September. Their responsibilities go beyond simply feeding the animals—they are tasked with building appropriate living spaces, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring the pigs receive proper care and attention.

This hands-on experience teaches students valuable life skills such as responsibility, hard work, and the importance of animal welfare. The process also provides insight into the day-to-day operations of farming, preparing these students for careers in agricultural science, livestock management, and beyond.

The prize: A 250-pound pig

The event’s main attraction is, of course, the 250-pound pig that will be raffled off. The lucky winner will not only take home a substantial amount of fresh, high-quality pork but will also be able to select the cuts of meat they prefer. After the drawing, the winner can pick up their pig at Steele Buffalo, which will be processed according to the winner’s preferences. This opportunity to stock a freezer with local, farm-raised meat is a great reward for the winner, and it is a unique way to enjoy locally sourced, sustainable food. Deaton said the other piglets would probably be sold.

Supporting the next generation of agricultural leaders

The Lumpkin County FFA Pig Raffle is more than just a fundraising event—it’s a community celebration of agriculture and youth involvement. The raffle helps students develop important skills while promoting the agricultural industry. Through hands-on experiences like raising and caring for livestock, students gain an appreciation for the hard work and dedication that goes into food production.

Additionally, the funds raised support the broader mission of the FFA, helping to fund scholarships, educational trips, and leadership programs that empower students to become leaders in agriculture and beyond.

Join in the fun and support local agriculture

The Lumpkin County FFA Pig Raffle is an excellent way for the community to unite and support local youth and agriculture. Whether you’re a farmer or simply someone who appreciates the value of supporting education and sustainable farming practices, this event is an opportunity to make a difference.

It is not too late to buy your raffle ticket. A raffle ticket costs $20, which covers the cost of processing the pig. You can purchase a ticket at https://venmo.com/u/Mitzi-Deaton
