Just over 6% of Habersham County’s active registered voters have cast ballots ahead of Tuesday’s election.
Numbers released Saturday by Habersham County Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison show 1,442 voters went to the polls during early and advance voting. Another 239 voted by absentee ballot.
Ellison says her office mailed out a total of 348 absentee ballots ahead of the November 5 election. Early voting began on October 15 and ended at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 1.
There are 28,211 registered voters in Habersham County; of those, 26,374 are listed as active registered voters.
Low turnout could help push through referendums
This is an off-year election and that usually means two things: 1) Low voter turnout and 2) Governing authorities put referendums on the ballot tthat stand a better chance of passing with low turnout.
The big referendum for Habersham County this year is the proposed $31.7 million jail bond referendum. If voters approve it, the county will raise property taxes to pay for a new jail which the sheriff and other county officials insist is sorely needed.
Voters in Cornelia and Clarkesville will decide whether to allow Sunday brunch alcohol sales.
In addition to the referendums, there are several elected offices up for grabs.
