Lost hiker located in Habersham

(Cleveland)- A hiker was located in Habersham hours after getting lost in Northern White County Wednesday afternoon. David Murphy, White County Public Safety Director said Thursday, White County 9-1-1 was contacted around 4 PM Wednesday by a male hiker who had driven to US Forest Road 79, Tray Mountain Road in northern White County.

The unidentified hiker started walking about 4 miles up the road. Murphy said, he later veered off the trail and could not find his way back to his vehicle.

According to Murphy, once firefighters were advised of the lost hiker, White County Fire Captain Terry Sosebee called the Georgia State Patrol and requested the activation of their helicopter to assist in the search.

The hiker, who was not identified, was located around 6 pm in Habersham County.

Murphy said the hiker was provided information and he made contact with the crew on board the helicopter, who guided him to Odis Barron Road in Habersham. U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement then met with the hiker and escorted him to safety.

The hiker was not injured, according to Murphy.
